Portmeirion Splat

This fun and imaginative pattern from Rob Scotton will delight cat lovers everywhere. The off the wall humour and finely drawn pattern amuses and delights the young at heart. Splat from Portmeirion Pottery is presented on the ceramic shapes designed for the introduction of the major ranges within the Soho Collection and it combines humour with style and practicality.

Splat

The sophisticated ceramic shapes, designed in association with the Queensberry Hunt design team, mark a new era for the company. Whimsical but not obvious, most pieces within the range show not only the Splat Cat but hidden on most items is also the small mouse. The world wide recognised antagonism between cat and mouse, which has
been the corner stone of many cartoon partnerships from Tom and Jerry right up to the modern, if a little sadistic, Itchy and Scratchy is the perfect combination.

Rob Scotton

Having graduated in illustration in 1983, Rob Scotton has made card design his very own. Working originally for Kingsley Cards Ltd., more recently Rob Scotton has provided images for card consultancy Cardmasters Ltd. His wonderful dreamy characters and landscapes combine child-hood innocence with a humorous and often wry look at life. Utilising cutting edge computer programmes, Rob Scotton is very much at the forefront of his craft. As well as working on concept and character development for a series of animation projects, Rob will continue to break new boundaries, producing original designs for Portmeirion that will delight, enchant and amuse our customers.
Splat is an original and quirky design which has already become a highly collected pattern. Rob's style is highly distinctive and he has already produced art work for the company which has featured heavily in their mug collection. Rob produced the now retired ranges of Life with Gus Range, the Farmyard Range, Zodiac Signs and the phenomenally successful Paw Prints in the Snow Range several years ago. Splat represents the first full tableware for Rob and Portmeirion and the appeal was so immediate that it won the Gift Associations "Gift of the Year" in the first year of its launch.

Splat Collection

The main body of the collection is simple and understated with small motifs of the Cat and Mouse on a plain white background. This is complemented by the more highly decorated mug and Placemats and Coasters ranges. The mugs and placemats are divided into two collections "Mischief" and "Well Done". "Well Done" features the Cat and Mouse in the kitchen while "Mischief" places the pair in amusing situations such as hung from washing lines and sunbathing.

In 2006 the background colour used for Splat was altered to give a clearer base for the motif enhancing the detail of the deign.
