About Zeller Keramik

Begun by Josef Anton Burger this place is now considered historically the cradle of ceramic production in Germany.
The history of Zeller Keramik has seen many changes both in the production methods and the type of ware manufactured over the years.
Early Zeller stoneware from 1800 to 1860 saw the first use of the English
"Wedgewood" style in Germany and introduction of the "reprint
decoration". In 1800 more sober forms without decoration were produced
but by 1808 the factory were producing more decorative souvenir plates.
Between 1842 and 1942 the factory started to produce more practical
tableware. Items with handles such as cups and jugs were introduced
and in 1858 the company won the first of its many awards for "perfection
in porcelain production"
In 1896 the company perfected transfer decoration on to stoneware and
many new designs were introduced. Production and decoration became easier
and the company prospered during the period. In 1898 the factory's most
recognised and successful pattern was launched "Cocks and Hens"
1942 saw power shortages owing to World War II which meant that all production at the factory was halted for a time. Zeller Keramik is recognised today to be one of the most successful German ceramic manufactures with its ware selling all over the world.
Today's factory stands in the same place as the original factory (Top
Right Image). Only a small part of the original has been persevered
and this is shown in the middle right hand image. The lower factory
(bottom right hand image) was built in 1864 and was at the centre for
the new decorating techniques using transfers. The site saw the first
production of Cocks and Hens over 100 years ago.
In 1907 George Schmider combined the original "Upper Factory" with the more modern "Lower Factory" and this remains the headquarters of Zeller Keramik today.
