The long standing success of Portmeirion Pottery has been Botanic Garden and the long standing success of Botanic Garden is its faithfulness to nature.
When Portmeirion decided to design and produce a range of personalised giftware based on Botanic Garden they could have chosen a number of options. Flowers have long been associated with sentiments such as a Rose for love etc but this idea didn't maintain the ranges close and faithful connection to the natural world. Instead they chose flowers associated with the months of the year. Because of this careful selection of plants each design is evocative of each month, the daffodils of a spring March or Snowdrops of a snowy January. Although maybe most obvious as birthday gifts these pieces are also excellent for commemorating a special event.

Initially the Flowers of the Month Collection consisted of Teacups and Saucers and was introduced at the beginning of 2006.
The cups and saucers proved an instant hit with demand out pacing production to begin with. Each cup and saucer was supplied in its own gift box cleverly designed to show the design and enhance the product. The customer feedback was so positive that Portmeirion returned to the drawing board this summer to design further
items in the range which would also lend themselves to the gift market. Round and Heart shaped boxes were the first products to leave the drawing board and go into production. These boxes were delicate and femine and allowed the gift to be more personal and decorative. Portmeirion were still keen to extend the range again to reflect other occasions other than birthdays.
The birth of a grandchild or special anniversary seemed like occasions that could be celebrated by depicting the relevant month of the year. The answer was simple , Photo Frames. Not only to commemorate the month but to also hold a photo associated with the occasion being celebrated.
